Save Pell Grants for College Students
November 10th 2011 00:06
By Ray Tapajna Just take a couple minutes to help save grants
for college students.
U.S. Congress "Super Committee" is evidently seeking to cut student aid which already has suffered many takeaways.
We receive the following email from John Carroll University. I went there but the same applys to all colleges and universities.
President Obama bailed out the financial institutions, banks and giant corporations but ignore those on the bottom with many losing everything.
The money interests were part of the problem. Many governors and senators who now want to cut and cut are from this group.
Let's remind the "Super Committee" in Congress headed by Senator Portman who want to cut students aid, the GI Bill after World War 2 created an educated class that in turn created a middle class economy. Instead of thinking about cutting aid, Congress should be thinking about education programs like the the GI Bill that could do the same.
We need to let them also know free trade affected many too in getting a college degree. I worked at four different factories while going to college full time and made the equivalent of $15 to $20 per hour. If these jobs were available today, millions would be standing in line to get them including college graduates.
1. Campaign to save college students
As you might be aware, we are facing critical times for federal student aid
programs. The Joint Committee on Deficit Reduction or “Super Committee” is
mandated to reach an agreement by November 23, 2011, on cutting the deficit
by $1.2 trillion. Of concern, is the fact that student aid has already lost
over $30 billion paying down the deficit in prior Reconciliation bills and
the Budget Control Act. Currently, 20% of our currently enrolled students
receive a Pell grant (up to $5,550) each year.
John Carroll University and the Association of Jesuit Colleges and
Universities (AJCU) are asking for your assistance in saving Pell grants and
Student aid from potential cuts from the Joint Committee on Deficit
Reduction and the FY12 Appropriations. The [2]Student Aid Alliance, the
higher education coalition of AJCU and 61 other higher education
associations, has developed a Petition in support of Federal Student Aid
which will be sent to Capitol Hill. The goal is to saturate all campuses
across the country, so there will be thousands of signatures. The petition
is basic and can be found at:

Our nation sorely needs to power up its economic engine. Work force projections show that by 2018, there will be jobs for as many as 22 million new workers with college degrees, but on our current trajectory, we won’t make that goal—in fact we’ll miss it by 3 million workers.
Recent budget deals have already cut $30 billion from the student aid programs, sacrificing some students’ benefits to pay for others. States across the country are cutting higher education from their own budgets.
That’s why it’s more important than ever to preserve, protect and provide adequate funding for the core federal student aid programs—such as Pell Grants and student loan benefits. Together, these programs offer students an opportunity to acquire the knowledge and skills our nation demands for a strong recovery.
Tough budget decisions in DC have put pressure on all federal spending, but cutting student aid, a long-term investment in our nation’s future, doesn’t make sense.
I support protecting federal student aid. Keep college within reach for our nation’s students and families
