......... Is making money on money amoral?  If money is just printed paper based on interest and debts, is it immoral? Does this kind of money assume a need for debts? Is it right for the Federal Reserve Bank to take printed paper and call it money and then charge  interest on it?  If the stock market is based on speculation and workers are fired instead of hired for the sake of stock value, is it immoral? Is double digit interest on credit cards and loans right when the general interest rate is so low? Are Pay Day loan stores amoral taking advantage of a working poor class?
What was Jesus all about when he confronted the moneychangers in the temple?  Have all the job losses related to investment, moral? Who has the right to play with peoples lives this way? Why should the value of work be deflated for the sake of speculations, investments and profits?  Is it right for a company to sell products under costs to gather money to play the stock market instead of making money on the products?  As consumers, are we now  really voting for what kind of society we want at the check out line rather than in a voting booth?
Capitalism without a conscience, will fail.....
Recently, President Bush said Capitalism without a conscience will fail. He was referring to the Enron and World Coms of the world while ignoring the "commoditising " of the American worker who has been put on a world trading block to compete with the wage slaves of the world as just another commodity instead of a human being with human dignity. There are many others in denial as a race to the bottom is being boosted by so call "Free Trade" which in reality is not real trade but the moving of production from place to place based on the cheapest labor markets.  The common expression   "It is nothing personal, It's just business" takes control.
     1. Labor is not a tool of Capitalism. It is just the opposite. Capitalism is supposed to be the tool of the workers to better themselves and have something extra to add to the common good.  With Globalism now, it does not matter if you are a Communist, Socialist or Capitalist because with the new world economy , elite groupings, vast transnational corporations, world banks and international bureaucies like the WTO  control events outside the democratic process and individual governments. A  CEO of a top transnational corporation says that we must get rid of our old fashion concept of sovereignty.
     2. Our economic choices should be judged on how they succeed in protecting human dignity in the workplace.
     3. Any standard used to judge human dignity this way  should be based on the most vulnerable among us. If slave labor and destitute workers are the "low water mark" and used as a common denominator economically, it certainly is not Capitalism with a conscience.
     4. All workers should have the right to secure productive work with just wages, benefits, and decent working conditions. All have the right to make enough money to support their family and have something left over to support the common good too.
     5. When and if workers are displaced, institutions should be in place to make sure the displaced regain their place in the work world.
     6. Businesses should be free to do their thing but not at the expense of a working poor class. We now have created a working poor class in the USA and a wage slave class outside of the USA.
     7. The President of the USA now acts as the top CEO of a world trade based really on a new slave trade - a wage slave trade. The USA with so many of their factories now outside the USA has become an economic imperialistic colonial nation. With this situation, globalism breeds wars in the need to protect national interests in mixed geopolitical environments.
Rerum Novarum-
One of the strongest documents pertaining to social justice in the workday was Rerum Novarum. It was an encyclical by Pope Leo in 1891 on the "Condition of Labor" and was a ruling guide for over a century for social justice in the workday. It spoke to all men of good will. It was the basis for the right for workers to unite as a group. It was also writtent to contest the socialist movement.
Now many are finding Rerum Novarum a vehicle to balance out  social justice, labor and wages in our times..  Basically it says we all have the moral responsibility in behalf of social justice and social well being to balance out the pursuits of Capitalism.  As noted, Rerum Novarum states, Let it be taken for granted that workman and employer, as a rule, make free agreement, and in particular should agree freely as to wages....the wages should be sufficient to maintain the wage-earner in reasonable and frugal comfort. If the employer can not afford the worker this, then the worker is made a victim of force and injustice.  If one man hires out to another his strength or skill, he does it for the purpose of receiving in return what is necessary to fulfill  his needs. The employer should not look upon their employees as bondsmen and never worked them beyond their strenght.
As master of the labor, the employer may not exercise pressure upon the indigent and the destitute for the sake of gain. To use workers for only the sake of profit is condemned by all laws, human and divine. The foremost duty of the state should be to make sure there are laws and institutions for all to realize the public well being of workers and the right to private property.
---We can see how much of this has been discarded in recent times. We have created a working poor class here and a destitute working class outside our country who grow and produce our products for us.  Paul Maurin, a co founder of the Catholic Workers movement said , Work should make it easy for men to be good.  We  have lost our place in  history and globalism now breeds all kinds of economic diseases.  It was Franklin Roosevelt who said -economic diseases are highly communicable. Free trade as it is conducted to day is like sex with each trading partner living with every other trading partner along the way. Evil is passed on in the process with things like drug trade and illegal speculation playing strong roles ( Search out Rerum Novarum on the internet yourself and study it to see where you fit in.)

...ON BUSINESS PRACTICES...
(Today with all the unethical business practices being exposed with the Enrons and WorldComs plus the missed escapades of "Chainsaw" Dunlap in the 1990's, can a person of good will be in the corporate world).... the following is from the Universe Bulletin some years ago.....On Business Practices:
....." I find your article "Christians can do business without 'doing in values" as a disservice. We must stop conning the young into thinking the corporate world is a place where you can exist as a Christian. It is perhaps spiritually bankrupt............ Teachers (in colleges) are good in their sphere of influence but unfortunately only pass on the method of being a good teacher and not anything that is happening on the street. "  How can a Professor in business or economic classes with tenure and security pass on realities about the business world.
A 70-page report by the National Council of Churches said many years ago that most laymen find little help in living out their faith in secular institutions where they spend most of their time.  Since then not much has changed ( and even as become worst in recent years ) ..... the universities should not conned the  young into thinking  it is possible  to put family, work in the corporate world and God all together......[ is this true? ... have we become too tied into  the phrase--- 'it's nothing personal, it is a only business'....]   Are we living off the working poor here in the USA, destitute workers and the wage slaves of the world now  and do not want to acknowlege that we support this corrupt system.  Do we vote at the cash register line more than in a voting booth about what kind of society we want.
