This is from the Cleveland Plain Dealer's letters to the editors Forum section
by Stanley J. Niemic about Senator George Voinovich retiring from the U.S. Senate.
Senator Voinovich
was one of the better politicians. He is a conservative Republican but acted in an independent fashion during his time
in office. I may have voted for him in my earlier years but he lost me when he joined with globalist free traders. I always did wonder about his understanding of the common good. As the mayor of Cleveland, he proved to be a good care
taker of the city but really did not preserve the common good when it came to protecting jobs. And as Stanley
Niemec says in his letter to the editors below, Senator Voinovich just did not understand what was happening in our country
with cities like Cleveland beings devastated by free trade.
Senator Voinovich lived during World War 2 and must
know that the U.S. industrial might won World War 2. Afterwards the Marshall Plan came to restore economies in Europe and
Asia. It was based on duplicating success and not shredding it as free trade has done. In the end, we really have lost
World War 2 fifty years later. Our mayors and leading politicians like Senator Voinovich surrendered to free trade.
Sir James Goldsmith, a former corporate raider, said as much in his book The Trap. Now many of our cities look like
some of the cities that were bombed in World War 2.
How can anyone just stand by trying to preseve the status
quo while all this was happening. Manuel Castells who wrote several books about globalization and free trade predicted the
coming of the Bewildered New World years ago as it is today. I wonder why our political leaders acted as if they blind
to what was happening. (See more at our http://tapsearch.com/flatworld site.
Here is what Stanley J. Niemiec says about Senator Voinovich
Voinovich
legacy: A mixed bag
The Plain Dealer printed a highly laudatory article on retiring Sen. George Voinovich and his long public service to our city, state and nation (Nov. 29). Voinovich undoubtedly has been an honest public servant,
who suffered a grievous loss with the untimely demise of a beloved daughter, and I applaud his decision to remain in Cleveland's
Collinwood neighborhood. But a recent drive through Collinwood left me filled with tears as I observed abandoned factories and
the economic devastation caused by the ruinous free-trade policies promulgated by members of Congress over the last 20 years.
No enemy in wartime that could have conquered the United States would have so destroyed our cities as have our globalist,
free-trade politicians in league with the giant corporations. And the trickledown effect is enormous, encompassing schools,
municipalities and hospitals, all operating in the red due to the loss of factories, businesses and high-paying jobs that
generated valuable tax dollars. So have any of the politicians really helped our nation by staving off the horrible
economic conditions that must surely follow such folly? I think not. So while Voinovich deserves much praise, I wish he and
his colleagues could have done more to preserve jobs in our state and nation. Stanley J. Niemiec Cleveland

Another letter writer to the editor - Robert Antall wrote the same day ........."
I would have expected more from a senator representing the Ohio electorate, especially one who is not running for re-election.
In recent votes, he has shown how little he cares for the jobless middle class and poor in Ohio."

On the other side of the coin, we still have Congressman Dennis Kucinich who has been
a presidential candidate who boldly denounced the unfair NAFTA and GATT trade agreements for years. I could never vote
for him because of his ultra liberal stance on many issues but more than that, I can not forget how he attacked corporations
in Cleveland while he was mayor. For me his turn around came too late as millions has lost their jobs by the free enterprise
systems being ransacked by the money changer free traders. Many of the corporations that were hit, employed thousands
of workers in our city and Congressman Kucinich as mayor started the attack early in his career.
His bold stands
against free trade are good but his early actions led the way to the devastation of our city.

And all of the above can be said more many cities and towns across
America. Hurricane Katrina in New Orleans exposed a vast under class living in a silent depression and we all know that
New Orleans is just one of many cities in the same condition.
